Title of dissertation: ION BINDING AND TRANSPORT BY SYNTHETIC MOLECULAR ASSEMBLIES Frank William Kotch, Doctor of Philosophy, 2003 Dissertation directed by: Professor Jeffery T. Davis Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Self-assembly of small synthetic molecular building blocks has been applied to generate functional structures capable of binding and transporting cations and anions. Major discoveries from the research include a self-assembled ion pair receptor, ligands capable of K-selective transport through membranes, a compound that forms Clselective ion channels in planar and cellular membranes, and a series of efficient chloride transporters. Calix[4]arene-guanosine conjugates cG 2.26 and cG 2.34 are shown to assemble into Na-templated tubular architectures by H NMR, transmission electron microscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry, and to selectively transport K over Na and Cs across

Host-Guest Chemistry in Layer-by-Layer Assemblies Containing Calix[n]arenes and Cucurbit[n]urils: A Review
This review provides an overview of the synthesis of layer-by-layer (LbL) assemblies containing calix[n]arene (CA[n]) and cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]) and their applications. LbL assemblies, such as thin films and microcapsules, containing selective binding sites have attracted considerable attention because of their potential use in separation and purification, sensors for ions and molecules, and c...

متن کاملThe effect of varied ion distributions on long-range DNA charge transport.
Long-range oxidative damage to DNA was utilized as a probe to delineate the effects of different ion distributions on DNA charge transport. DNA assemblies were constructed, containing a tethered rhodium intercalating photooxidant, spatially separated from two 5'-GG-3' sites of oxidative damage, with either an A6-tract or a mixed DNA sequence intervening between the guanine doublets; the extent ...
متن کاملLariat ethers: from cation complexation to supramolecular assemblies
Lariat ethers are now well-known as macrocycles having one or more sidearms that contain donor groups and can interact with ring bound cations. Variations in structure and donor group arrangements lead to variation in cation binding strengths and selectivities. Such systems exhibit enhanced cation complexation and generally high complexation dynamics. The binding dynamics and strength may readi...
متن کاملIon-mediated electron transfer in a supramolecular donor-acceptor ensemble.
Ion binding often mediates electron transfer in biological systems as a cofactor strategy, either as a promoter or as an inhibitor. However, it has rarely, if ever, been exploited for that purpose in synthetic host-guest assemblies. We report here that strong binding of specific anions (chloride, bromide, and methylsulfate but not tetrafluoroborate or hexafluorophosphate) to a tetrathiafulvalen...
